Here are some of the activities we are planning this spring and summer for the Photography Club:

April 11: For our monthly meeting, Doug Coombs (http://www.dougsview.com/) will give us a presentation on tips for using Adobe Lightroom’s library module to import and organize photos on your computer.

May 9: Andy Butler will discuss techniques for night sky photography, particularly Milky Way photography. Later in the season, we plan to have a club outing to do this type of photography.

June 13: Randy McCormick will give a program “Sea to Summit—we’re all connected,” a photographic journey to the western Everglades on the southwest coast of Florida. If we look closely, we can see that many of the fundamental characteristics that underlie intact natural ecosystems are similar and can be experienced everywhere, whether in Florida or along the Continental Divide

Watch for our upcoming digital photo contest. We will officially announce the contest and rules by early summer, with submission around the first of August and display of the winners and other entrees at our September meeting.

Outings that we are working on include a photo shoot of the Cumbres & Toltec rail yard, a trip to the ghost town of Summitville and one or more summer outings for mountain scenery and wildflowers. Ideas for outings are always welcome!

October 9 Outing

Images from the Club’s Oct 9 fall color outing, to the Navaho Peak-Buckles Lake area. It was another day with variable weather, everything from sunshine to sleet to snow, creating some fascinating skies. Great images, if you could wait out the snow squalls, that is.

Fall Color Outing

A few photos from the September 29 Club outing, to the Plumtaw Road and Williams Creek area. Variable weather gave us some interesting skies!

Fall Color Outings

We are planning three “fall color” Photo Club outings for members to take advanatage of the spectacular fall foliage. The first will be September 29. We’ll do a drive and shoot outing, with only very short walks. The destination will probably be Plumtaw road and/or the Upper Piedra/Williams Creek area, depending on what looks good. This outing will begin at 1 PM. There are typically some good back-lit aspens in the mid afternoon. If you are interested in this outing, let me know (abutler@mac.com) and I’ll confirm final details of destination and meeting place.

Summer in the Mountains Outing

We will have a “summer in the mountains” photography outing on July 22 at 8 AM. There will be at least two stops, just across Wolf Creek Pass. First will be the Big Meadows Reservoir area, a mile or two off the highway on a gravel road. We can spend some time exploring the area around the reservoir, for some summer wildflowers, and perhaps reflections on the reservoir. It’s a popular fishing lake, but we should be there before it gets too crowded. We can then go back out to the highway, and drive a little over half a mile further towards South Fork to the Lake Fork pullout. There is a good trail here that we can follow along Lake Fork Creek. There are some good wildflowers, as well as nice scenes of the water flowing in the creek, and a small waterfall. Plan on half a mile or so of walking at each site. Bring water to drink, a lunch or snack, and dress for the weather. We should be back to Pagosa by 2 PM or so. Please let me know if you plan to attend.

Upcoming Photo Club Outings

We are planning two photo club outings in the near future. The first will be Saturday, May 20. Meet at the Coyote Hill parking area at 9:30. This is about 6 miles north on Piedra Rd. Where the pavement ends, you will cross a cattle guard, and the parking area is ON THE RIGHT shortly after that. The valleys are intensely green, the mountains still have snow, and the aspen are getting their “new leaf green”, so conditions are great for landscape photography. We will head further out Piedra Rd to the Williams Creek Reservoir area. Continue reading “Upcoming Photo Club Outings”
