Low Light Photography

The next meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on February 12 at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis St. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm, but feel free to join us for socializing and discussion of various photographic topics at 6 pm. Photography Club meetings are open to the public. Please enter the Church through the side door next to the parking lot.

This month’s discussion will be on the topic of Low Light Photography. Making photos when the light is low, such as after sunset, in the deep forest, or in dimly lit interiors, has its challenges. However, modern cameras and good technique can overcome many of these and open up a new world of photographic opportunities. This month’s program will center on a 30 min video presentation on Low Light Photography by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. We will then discuss some of the situations where you are likely to be faced with low light, and solutions to allow making of great photographs under these challenging conditions. 

Following the program, we will have our monthly image share. Photography Club members may bring up to five images (on a flash drive) each to share and discuss. This meeting will also be available on Zoom for those who can’t attend in person. If you are not a Club member, contact abutler@mac.com for the Zoom link.

Virtual Shutter Therapy—Minimalism

Each month the Photography Club sponsors a Virtual Shutter Therapy session on our Facebook page. For the February topic, explore the art of minimalism through your lens. Focus on simplicity, negative space, and intentional composition. Highlight subtle details, clean lines, or a single striking subject. Use light and shadow to emphasize your vision. Let less tell more—what story can you convey with only the essentials? Before March 2, please share up to three photos by commenting on the post on this theme at the Club’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/PagosaPhotoClub. This challenge is open to all photographers, whether a Club member or not. Please show your appreciation by liking and commenting on the works of others. 

Photography Club Membership

Did you get a new camera or lens for Christmas? If so, joining the Photography Club would be a great way to get tips on using your gear and learn more about photography. The Pagosa Springs Photography Club is open to everyone who loves making and viewing great photos. Our members use cameras of all types, from smartphones to medium format. Benefits of membership include our educational programs, image sharing and discussion, photo outings, and contests to help each other improve our photography. Club membership is just $25/year. Creating Depth in Photography

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club is meeting on January 8th at the Community United Methodist Church, located at 434 Lewis St. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm, but you can come early to socialize and chat about photography at 6 pm. Everyone’s welcome to join us! Just enter the church through the side door next to the parking lot.

This month’s speaker is David Lenderman. David will give a multi-part presentation. He’ll start with a short slideshow set to music, showing some of his favorite photos. Then, he’ll talk about why depth is important in photography. He’ll show you how to make flat photos look more interesting and engaging with a sense of depth. David will share practical compositional techniques that anyone can use to add depth to their own photos, no matter what camera you use.

The last part of David’s presentation will be about suno.com , an AI music generator. With Suno and other AI music programs, you can easily make your own music. As image creators, we often need the perfect soundtrack for our slideshows or videos, and now you can make your own! David will explain how to use Suno.com and show you examples of the music you can create.

David Lenderman has been an avid photographer for over 25 years. He specializes in underwater, travel, and wildlife photography. He’s been to six of the seven continents, looking for amazing scenes and fascinating animals. In 2022, David and his wife moved to Pagosa Springs, so they can enjoy the natural beauty of Colorado and the warm, friendly community. David often speaks at photography and dive clubs, and he loves sharing his knowledge and inspiring other photographers.

The presentation will be followed by our monthly image share. Photography Club members may bring up to five images each to share and discuss. 7th Annual Digital Photography Contest

The 2024 Pagosa Springs Photography Club Digital Photography Contest is now open for entries. The Contest is open to all Photography Club members in good standing. New or renewing members may join the Club at the time they enter the contest. The submission deadline is October 9, 2024, and prizes will be presented at an Awards Celebration on November 13. As in previous years, members may submit up to 6 photos (2 per category) for a flat fee of $10.  You only need to submit your digital image files, not prints. The top three images in each category will receive ribbons and cash prizes at the Awards Celebration, and all entries will be displayed at that time. There will be “People’s Choice” voting on the images entered, as well.

This year there will be three categories: Nature (landscapes, wildlife, flowers, etc); Portraits (which may be of people, pets, or other domestic animals), and Manmade/Other, (architecture, trains and cars, street photography, abstract, etc.) See below to obtain the contest guidelines and entry form. 

If you haven’t entered the contest previously, this is a great opportunity to get feed back, both from the judge and from other Club members, about your images. Our goal with this contest is not only to recognize members for their talent, but also to encourage everyone to share their best work with the group. So select your best images and submit them!

Creative Use of Aperture and Depth of Field

The next meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held Sept 13 at the Community United Methodist Church on Lewis Street. Come at 6 pm to socialize with your fellow shutterbugs. The presentation will start at 6:30. The topic this month is Aperture and Depth of Field. We will watch and discuss a video on this subject by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. The video will discuss how to use aperture to create visual effects and control depth of field. When, and why might you want to use a shallow depth of field? What’s the effect of lens focal length on depth of field? What creative optical effects can you produce with either a low aperture such as f/2.8 or a high aperture like f/22? What is your experience? As Andy will be out of town, Vice President Gregg Heid will be hosting this meeting.

This will be a hybrid meeting. Those who can’t attend in person may request the Zoom link by email to abutler@mac.com. After the presentation, we will have a member’s image share. Please bring your images to share (up to 5 per photographer, jpeg format please) on a flash drive.

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club promotes educational, social and fun interactions between all who enjoy making and viewing great photography. The club sponsors educational programs and outings to help photographers hone their skills.   We welcome photographers of all skill levels. Dues for 2023 are just $25 ($35 family). Those who join or renew prior to September 15 are eligible to take part in our 2023 Digital Photography Contest. Sixth Pagosa Springs Photo Club Digital Photo Contest

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club is pleased to announce our Sixth Annual Digital Photo Contest. 

There will be four Contest categories this year: Landscape, People, Creative, and Nature. The contest is open to all current members of the Club. New or renewing members may join at the time they enter the contest. Each member may submit two images per category (up to six total), for a flat entry fee of $10. Images should be submitted as digital files. Submissions are due by September 15, 2023. Awards will be presented at the PSPC October meeting and Awards Celebration, which will be held at the PLPOA Club House on Vista Dr., on October 11, 6:00 pm. The top 3 images in each category will receive cash prizes. All entries will be displayed at the Awards Celebration. We will again have “People’s Choice” voting on the images entered, as well.

2022 PSPC Digital Photography Awards Celebration

The Fifth Annual Digital Photography Awards Celebration of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club was held on September 14 at the Elk Park Meadows Lodge, and by Zoom. This year 18 photographers submitted images in four categories: Landscape, Creative, People, and Nature. Images in each category were evaluated by impartial judges on the basis of composition, impact, and technical quality. In addition, Club members voted to determine “People’s Choice” winners for each of the four categories. During the evening, we enjoyed dinner, socializing and viewing all of the entries in this year’s competition.

In the Nature category, 1st place was awarded to Darryl Saffer for Terror Heron. Herb Grover received 2nd for Great Blue Flight, and 3rd was awarded to Kathie Disner for Pasque Flowers. This category was very competitive, with six images receiving Honorable Mention: My Fish and Little Blue Heron, both by Adrienne Disbrow, Dancing Cranes, by Andy Butler, Two Ravens by Herb Grover, Rufous by Liz Jamison and Hunting Stare by Scott Galabota. In the People’s Choice voting for this category, Disner’s  Pasque Flowers received 1st, Darryl Saffer was awarded 2nd for Unhappy Fox and Grover’s Great Blue Flight was 3rd. The winning image in the Creative category was Black ’n’ Yellow by Scott Galabota. Second was awarded to Chris Roebuck for BNSF8470 and 3rd went to Bill Milner for Penitente Cactus. Andy Butler and Tony Aldwell received Honorable Mentions for Desert Sunset and Glass Lights respectively. Topping the People’s Choice poll for this category was Spiders by Adrienne Disbrow. Roebuck’s BNSF8470 and Aldwell’s Glass Lights tied for 2nd. 

Among the images entered in the People category, Kathie Disner received 1st place for Rascals, and also 2nd place for My Boots. Bill Milner was awarded 3rd for Charles Martinez, and Scott Galabota’s The Joy of Color received an Honorable Mention. Results of the People’s Choice voting for this category were Disner’s Rascals in first, Galabota’s The Joy of Color 2nd, and Fishin’ by Adrienne Disbrow in 3rd. 

In the Landscape category, the top image was Yei Bichei & Totem Poll, by Andy Butler. Dave Anderson received 2nd for White Sands Dark Cloud, and Herb Grover’s Bosque Sunrise was 3rd. Receiving Honorable Mentions in this group were Lake San Cristobal by Scott Galabota, Echo North Slot Canyon in Fall by John Farley, and Homestead by Chris Roebuck. People’s Choice voting selected Anderson’s White Sands Dark Cloud first, Piedra River by Adrienne Disbrow 2nd, and Butler’s Yei Bichei & Totem Pole in 3rd.

Congratulations to all the winners! Thanks to everyone who entered, all those who voted for the People’s choice, and those who helped with the logistics of the contest and Awards Celebration. These include Scott Galabota, John Farley, Liz Jamison, Susanne Russell, Chris Roebuck, Doris Gellert, and Gregg Heid.
