July Photo Club Meeting

The next meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.  We will meet at the Community United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. While the program will start at 6:30 p.m., feel free to arrive anytime after 6 p.m. to socialize.  Photography Club meetings are open to the public. Please use the side door near the parking lot to enter.

Our topic this month is Learning Photography From the Pros, presented by Herb Grover. We are lucky to live in a time when tips and tutorials on any number of subjects, including photography, are available on-line. Many pro photographers post regular articles and YouTube videos providing information on photographic topics. Some are better than others. Herb will introduce video tutorials by several of his favorite pro photographers, who are also very good at presenting information in a clear and useful fashion. The photographers Herb will discuss include tutorials from both landscape and wildlife photography, as well as topics related to post-processing. Most nature or landscape photographers will learn something from these presentations. Who are YOUR favorite pro photographers for learning more about photography?

Herb Grover is a retired University professor who spent more than 40 years teaching university courses in ecology, plant biology, and environmental science. He is now retired, living near Pagosa Springs, and focusing his creative energies on nature photography and videography.

Photography Club presentations are available on Zoom for those who can’t attend a meeting. For the Zoom link to this meeting, please contact hgroverco@gmail.com .

The Decisive Moment

The June Photography Club meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.,  at the Community United Methodist Church  (434 Lewis Street) in Pagosa Springs. While the program will start at 6:30 p.m., feel free to arrive anytime after 6 p.m. to socialize.  Photography Club meetings are open to the public. Please use the side door near the parking lot to enter.

Our topic this month is The Decisive Moment. We will discuss the meaning of this photographic concept and how to capture images of this type..

Photographers have the ability to record a fleeting moment in time. With the right light, good composition, an interesting subject and perfect timing, a photograph can be filled with unique emotion. The French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson is credited with originating the phrase “the decisive moment” to describe the process of photographing these situations.

For our June program, we will watch and discuss a video by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, offering ideas for practicing and achieving “decisive moment” photographs. Done well, this includes understanding your subject so that you can pre-visualize the timing and the composition needed to achieve your desired image. Although Cartier-Bresson pioneered this idea in his street photography, there are many other photographic situations such as wildlife, sports, and events where the concept may apply.

Following the presentation, we will have our monthly Image Share. Club members may bring up to five images to show and discuss. These should be brought on a thumb drive or SSD. With the new monitor at the church, size your images around 4000 pixels on the long side for best presentation.

This meeting will also be available by Zoom. Club members will receive the Zoom link by email, others may request it from abutler@mac.com

May Meeting: Ecuador’s Cloud Forest

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church located at 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Photo Club meetings are open to the public. Feel free to arrive anytime after 6 p.m. to socialize; the program will commence at 6:30 p.m. Please use the side door near the parking lot to enter.

The Mindo Cloud Forest is often enveloped in a perpetual mist and clouds, which provide consistent moisture to the landscape. Widely recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, this area boasts over 550 species of birds, many of which are not only visually striking but also exhibit unique behaviors. The Mindo Cloud Forest Foundation, a prominent conservation organization, recognizes the significance of “tourism-focused birdwatching” in fostering conservation and sustainable economic growth for local communities. By preserving this life-sustaining habitat, tourism can be economically attractive, contributing to the well-being of the region.

Charlie, a retired engineer with a passion for wildlife and landscape photography, settled in Pagosa Springs in 2022. Despite considering himself an amateur, his remarkable photographs showcase his skill.

Top Ten Photos, 2024

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club will meet on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, 6:00 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Arrive any time after 6 p.m. for socializing; the program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Our March program will be Top Ten: Show and Tell. In this popular program, members may bring up to ten of their photographs taken in the last year for brief discussion. This is a good exercise in choosing your top images of the year. These might be what you consider your best, your most interesting, or your most challenging photos. The goal is to inspire each other through a conversation about what makes great images, including aspects such as composition, impact, and technical quality. Please bring your images to the meeting on a flash drive.

This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to members; others who wish to attend may request the link by email to abutler@mac.com

March Virtual Shutter Therapy

The topic for the Club’s on-line challenge this month is Symmetry. Symmetry is all around us—perfect reflections in water, architectural balance, or nature’s mirrored patterns. Seek out scenes where symmetry creates harmony, whether in man-made structures, organic formations, or unexpected places. Consider perspective, lighting, and framing to enhance the effect. Will you find perfect symmetry or break the pattern for intrigue?  Please participate until April 6 by commenting on the Facebook post at https://www.facebook.com/PagosaPhotoClub. All are welcome to take part. Share up to three photos.  Like and comment on the works of others.

Low Light Photography

The next meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on February 12 at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis St. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm, but feel free to join us for socializing and discussion of various photographic topics at 6 pm. Photography Club meetings are open to the public. Please enter the Church through the side door next to the parking lot.

This month’s discussion will be on the topic of Low Light Photography. Making photos when the light is low, such as after sunset, in the deep forest, or in dimly lit interiors, has its challenges. However, modern cameras and good technique can overcome many of these and open up a new world of photographic opportunities. This month’s program will center on a 30 min video presentation on Low Light Photography by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. We will then discuss some of the situations where you are likely to be faced with low light, and solutions to allow making of great photographs under these challenging conditions.

Following the program, we will have our monthly image share. Photography Club members may bring up to five images (on a flash drive) each to share and discuss. This meeting will also be available on Zoom for those who can’t attend in person. If you are not a Club member, contact abutler@mac.com for the Zoom link.

Virtual Shutter Therapy—Minimalism

Each month the Photography Club sponsors a Virtual Shutter Therapy session on our Facebook page. For the February topic, explore the art of minimalism through your lens. Focus on simplicity, negative space, and intentional composition. Highlight subtle details, clean lines, or a single striking subject. Use light and shadow to emphasize your vision. Let less tell more—what story can you convey with only the essentials? Before March 2, please share up to three photos by commenting on the post on this theme at the Club’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/PagosaPhotoClub. This challenge is open to all photographers, whether a Club member or not. Please show your appreciation by liking and commenting on the works of others.
