Wildlife Photography in the San Juan Mountains

The November meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 6:30 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Our tuopic this month is Wildlife Photography in the San Juan Mountains, presented by Deirdre Rosenberg. This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to members; others who wish to attend may request the link by email to abulter@mac.com . If attending in person, feel free to arrive any time after 6 p.m. for socializing; the actual presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., MST. 

Deirdre Rosenberg is a wildlife photographer with a deep passion for the alpine environment. Her work with alpine and subalpine wildlife shines a light on how our changing climate and growing outdoor recreation impacts these beings and the ecosystems they call home. When Deirdre isn’t in the high mountains, she is working closely with red fox to visualize their dynamic family structures  and how they fit into our changing planet. Deirdre resides near Pagosa Springs in the rugged San Juan Mountains with her husband and dog. In her presentation, Deirdre will show and discuss some of her stunning images of the wildlife that make the San Juan Mountains their home, including Pika, Mountain Goats, and Red Fox. Following the presentation, members may share up to five of their recent images with the group. If attending by Zoom, please submit these by Tuesday, Nov 8. They may be emailed to abutler@mac.com. If attending in person, images may be brought on a flash drive.

In Search of Great Light

The October meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 6:30 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. This month’s program will be about Ambient Light, including discussion of exposure and how to make the most of different types of light. This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to members; others who wish to attend may request the link by email to abulter@mac.com . If attending in person, feel free to arrive any time after 6 p.m.; the actual presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., MST. 

For this program, we will watch and discuss a video by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore about ambient- or found- light, and how to identify various types of light to use in different photographic situations. The video covers how to see and identify great light, which is one of the keys to making great photographs. 

Club members may bring up to five images to share and discuss with the group following the presentation.  If you are attending in person, bring your images on a flash drive; if attending by Zoom, please email them to abutler@mac.com no later than  October 11. As a reminder, submitted images should be JPEG (JPG) format. Resize to about 2000 pixels in the longest dimension.

August Photo Club Meeting

The August meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 6:30 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Our program this month is Major contemporary photographers: John Fielder and Landscape Photography, presented by Dave Anderson. This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. If attending in person, feel free to arrive any time after 6 p.m.; the actual presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., MST. 

Dave Anderson is a member of the Photography Club and an accomplished landscape photographer. In his presentation, Dave will discuss John Fielder’s work in photography from the point of view of his composition of landscape images. John Fielder is a well known large format photographer, author, teacher, publisher and conservationist who has produced wonderful images of Colorado since the 1970’s, that put him at the apex of landscape photography. 

Club members may bring up to five images to share and discuss with the group following the presentation. Smart Phone Image Quality, July 13

Smart phone or dSLR?

The July meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 6:30 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Our program this month is Have phone cameras finally caught up with big iron in image quality?, presented by Joe Sinclair. This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. If attending in person, feel free to arrive any time after 6 p.m.; the actual presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., MDT. 

As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you. And for many of us, the one camera that we almost always have along is the one in our smart phone. How do the photos taken with our phone compare to those from a “real” camera? Joe will give a short presentation on the latest expert thinking about smartphone-camera image quality based on a DXOMARK article. DXOMARK is the premier camera/lens testing organization. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated Club member discussion about individual experiences with phone-camera image quality. Just how good are smart phone photos? What’s your experience?

Joe Sinclair has been a member of the Photography Club for several years. In addition, he is a member of the Napa Valley Photographic Society in California. He has been photographing for 60 years and has received numerous awards for his photos.

Fifth Annual Digital Photography Contest

The Pagosa Springs Photography Club (PSPC) is pleased to announce our Fifth Annual Digital Photo Contest. The contest is open to all current members of the Club. New members may join at the time they enter the contest. There will be four categories: Landscape, People, Creative, and Nature. Each member may submit two images per category (up to six total), for a flat entry fee of $10. Images should be submitted as digital files, and are due by August 10, 2022. Awards will be presented at the PSPC September meeting and Awards Celebration, which will be held on September 14, 6:30 PM. All entries will be displayed at the Awards Celebration.

Nightscape Photography

The June meeting of the Pagosa Springs Photography Club will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 6:30 p.m., at the Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street in Pagosa Springs. Our program this month is Nightscape Photography, presented by Andy Butler. This will be a hybrid meeting, also available on Zoom. If attending in person, feel free to arrive any time after 6 p.m.; the meeting and presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m., MST. 

It’s hard not to feel a sense of awe when you look at the stars on a clear, dark night. Modern digital cameras are able to produce high quality images from long exposures of weak starlight. This allows photographers to extend landscape photography into the night, producing stunning “nightscape” images, in which both the land and the sky are important compositional elements. In this presentation, Andy will discuss planning and taking nightscape photos featuring the Moon, Milky Way, star trails, and other features of the night sky. Topics will include planning for nightscape photos, discussion of camera and lens choices, focusing and exposure considerations, and use of both natural and artificial light to illuminate the foreground.
